RiverCom seeks voter support for 911 upgrade funding in February 2026

Leavenworth, WALocal News

RiverCom 911 is asking voters in Chelan and Douglas counties to approve a sales tax increase to enhance its emergency dispatch system, with a measure set for the February 10, 2026 special election ballot. The proposed tax would add one-tenth of one percent to the local sales tax, equating to one cent on a $10 purchase. RiverCom's current facilities are inadequate for the growing demands of the area, as noted in a 2019 study that labeled their quarters as "stressed beyond capacity. " The funding would allow for an expanded facility, improved technology, and better radio coverage in critical areas. Doug Jones, RiverCom's Executive Director, highlighted that effective 911 call answering is vital for community safety.

Approval of the measure would eliminate $1. 5 million in annual user fees currently paid by local public safety agencies, freeing up funds for other local needs. The board has committed to a cost-effective approach, aiming to minimize long-term debt. Community information sessions are planned for January 2026 to inform residents about the proposal and its benefits.
