U.S. 2 to Close West of Leavenworth for Rock Removal

Leavenworth, WALocal News

U. S. 2 west of Leavenworth will close for three days from August 19 to August 21 for rock removal as part of a slope stabilization project. The Washington State Department of Transportation (WSDOT) states that closing the highway completely is the most efficient way to remove large rocks safely. WSDOT spokesperson Sebastian Moraga noted, "Some rocks are massive," emphasizing the need for an unimpeded work zone to expedite repairs.

During the closure, passenger vehicles can detour through Chumstick Highway, while freight and oversized vehicles must use Blewett Pass. Residents and businesses within the closure area will still have access from the west side of the closure at Coles Corner. The slope stabilization project, which began in July, aims to repair four rock slopes between Stevens Pass and Leavenworth. WSDOT encourages travelers to check the real-time travel map for current conditions and updates on the project. The proactive measures taken by WSDOT aim to restore normal traffic flow as swiftly as possible.
