Firefighters make headway in Lower Sugarloaf Fire containment efforts

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Firefighters have contained 11 percent of the Lower Sugarloaf Fire, which has scorched over 17,000 acres since it ignited on September 1. The containment efforts have focused on strategic line construction and burning operations in key areas of the fire perimeter. Fire officials reported that firefighting teams utilized favorable weather conditions to enhance their strategies, particularly in the southern and western sections. They targeted unburned vegetation to direct the fire towards established boundaries while reinforcing fire lines with helicopter support. Over a thousand personnel, including 31 crews and multiple aircraft, are dedicated to subduing the fire's activity.

The Chelan County Commissioners declared a state of emergency to streamline firefighting efforts in light of the fire's progression. As weather conditions remain favorable, crews plan to continue improving fire line construction. Structure protection groups are actively assessing and preparing nearby structures to mitigate damage.
