City of Leavenworth backs Amtrak funding, accepts annexation process

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Leavenworth City Council voiced support for federal funding for Amtrak's Empire Builder during its July 22 meeting. The historic route, connecting Seattle to Chicago, served around 13,000 passengers at Icicle Station in 2024. Mark Meyer from the Aurora Group warned that Amtrak had not submitted a funding request for 2026, putting the service at risk due to aging equipment. Government Affairs Manager Chase Kitchen confirmed Amtrak's submission of its FY2026 Grant and Legislative Request but agreed that the council's resolution could influence funding decisions. Mayor Carl Florea indicated a willingness to contact legislators about the need for further investment in the rail service.

Additionally, the city council reviewed a Notice of Intent to Annex submitted for a 33. 41-acre property near US-2. If the annexation is approved, the property will come under city jurisdiction, affecting future development. The council plans to schedule a public hearing for the annexation process in an upcoming meeting.
