Number of emergency incidents threatens to overwhelm RiverCom 911 system

Leavenworth, WALocal News

RiverCom 911 is grappling with an unsustainable workload as public safety incidents in Chelan and Douglas counties have surged by over 15% in five years. Executive Director Doug Jones highlighted the meticulous work each incident requires, from logging details to coordinating with emergency responders. With limited space for new dispatchers, RiverCom recently faced a setback when its grant application for facility expansion was denied. The agency recognizes the urgent need to upgrade to next-generation 911 systems, which would enhance response capabilities. Improved cybersecurity measures and expanded radio coverage in rural and mountainous areas are also critical for effective emergency coordination.

Without these upgrades, response times could worsen during significant incidents. The RiverCom Administrative Board is actively seeking funding solutions to alleviate the mounting pressure. Keeping the public informed, they plan to communicate their progress on these essential improvements.
