Ecology proposes rules for statewide battery recycling program in Washington

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Washington Department of Ecology proposes regulations for a new battery recycling program, as mandated by a 2023 law requiring manufacturers to manage household battery disposal. This initiative aims to establish a producer-funded system, providing free and convenient recycling for batteries used in devices like flashlights and power tools. Peter Lyon, overseeing Ecology's Solid Waste Management program, highlighted the necessity of proper recycling to minimize safety and environmental hazards. The proposed rules outline definitions, collection standards, and funding mechanisms while excluding large batteries for electric vehicles and those built into consumer products. Currently, battery recycling in Washington is voluntary and inconsistent, leading to improper disposal and increased fire risks at landfills.

Public comments are open until September 10, 2025, with virtual public hearings planned for August 28 and September 3. The program aims to enhance recycling accessibility and reduce environmental risks associated with battery disposal. More information is available on Ecology's website.
