New advocacy group aims to save historic Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp
Friends of Lake Wenatchee YMCA Camp has formed to save the historic camp property after the Wenatchee Valley YMCA announced its intention to sell. The YMCA reported over $2 million in losses and noted that only 300 campers attended each year, with just 125 from the local counties. The advocacy group, consisting of alumni and community supporters, is exploring options for direct acquisition and partnerships to ensure the camp's future. Mac Bledsoe, a former camper, emphasized the camp's transformative impact, stating selling it would be akin to selling a school. The Friends group is currently pursuing nonprofit status, connecting alumni, and seeking donations to support the camp's preservation.
They aim to honor the camp's legacy through environmental education programs, regardless of ownership changes. Renovation costs to meet safety standards are estimated in the tens of millions, prompting the YMCA's decision to sell. The group remains committed to preserving the camp's rich history and significance in the community.
