Blake Relief Day to provide legal support for drug conviction vacations

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Washington state is set to hold its first “Blake Drug Possession Relief Day” on July 18 at the Chelan County Courthouse, providing crucial support for individuals with qualifying drug possession convictions. The event runs from 9 a. m. to noon and 1–4 p. m.

, where legal aid groups will assist in vacating convictions and processing refunds for fines. The State v. Blake ruling from 2021 found the state's previous drug possession law unconstitutional, impacting over 200,000 felony charges and 150,000 misdemeanor marijuana convictions. Judge Allen Blackmon stated that it's vital to ensure individuals are not burdened by convictions that should not exist. A University of Washington study in 2022 indicated that such assistance days reduced recidivism and improved participants' quality of life.

Funds for reimbursements will come from state legislative allocations, not local sources. Organizers encourage advance registration to streamline the process, making it easier for eligible participants to receive assistance. The Blake Refund Bureau will remain available for those who cannot attend the event in person.
