Howard Hopkins Memorial Pool set to open after extended delays

Leavenworth, WALocal News

The Howard Hopkins Memorial Pool in Leavenworth is set to open on July 7 after a six-week delay from its usual Memorial Day weekend schedule due to extensive repairs and supply chain challenges. City Communications Manager Kara Raftery highlighted that several factors, including staff availability and health requirements, contributed to the new opening date. The Leavenworth Swim Team has struggled during the closure, missing three weeks of practice, which has raised concerns about their readiness for upcoming meets. Board Member Kristin Effland expressed frustration over the delays, noting that the team's short six-week season has been further compromised. Last year's delays had already cost the team valuable practice time, leading to disappointment over this year's prolonged closure.

The city plans to extend the pool's season into September to address the impact of the delays. Raftery confirmed that critical plumbing repairs are complete, but some electrical work remains to ensure the filtration system is fully operational. The city remains cautiously optimistic about the new opening date while preparing for potential unforeseen challenges.
