Speed limit reduced on section of East Leavenworth Road

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Chelan County Commissioners reduced the speed limit on East Leavenworth Road from 35 mph to 25 mph at a June 24 meeting, prioritizing community safety. The change impacts the stretch from milepost 0 to milepost 1. 19, an area that has seen increased residential development and traffic. Local residents, including Omar Canty and Janet Frank, expressed their support during a public hearing, citing concerns over speeding, especially during busy weekends. A speed study conducted by the Chelan County Engineer indicated that six out of nine accidents on this stretch in the past five years were linked to excessive speed.

The study also noted the narrow road and high driveway density as contributing factors to safety risks. The speed limit will remain at 35 mph from milepost 1. 19 to milepost 3. 38, where conditions are deemed safer for higher speeds. Enforcement will be necessary to address speeding issues, as the study emphasized the role of local drivers in the accidents.

This decision reflects a commitment to adapting road safety measures to evolving community needs.
