Fire Officials urge public to Skip the Sparks this Fourth of July to prevent wildfires

Leavenworth, WALocal News

Fire officials in Chelan and Douglas counties are urging residents to forgo personal fireworks this Fourth of July to mitigate wildfire risks. Deputy Chief Kurt Blanchard of the Wenatchee Valley Fire Department recounted the overwhelming challenges faced last year when fireworks ignited the Balsam Root Fire, necessitating evacuations and taxing first responders. In Chelan County, fireworks are banned entirely, while Douglas County permits them in limited hours at Rock Island. Chief Arnold Baker of the Manson Fire Department warned that even a single spark can lead to devastating wildfires in the region's arid climate. The “Skip the Sparks” campaign is designed to promote fire safety and is backed by local fire departments and health officials.

Chelan County will also close dirt roads from July 2–9 to enhance safety. Violators of the fireworks ban can face fines, jail time, and liability for any fire suppression costs incurred. Community leaders emphasize the importance of respecting these restrictions to protect lives and property.
