Port of Bellingham allows evaluation of feasible cruise ship business

Bellingham, WALocal News

The Port of Bellingham has approved a feasibility study to explore potential cruise ship business at its cruise terminal, engaging Global Ports Holding for the evaluation. This study will analyze market demand, vessel types, and routes, focusing on small to medium-sized ships operating in regions like Alaska and the Salish Sea. Economic Development Director Tyler Schroeder highlighted the importance of assessing necessary infrastructure improvements alongside demand. Commissioner Michael Shepard expressed his support, stating that investigating economic opportunities aligns with the commission's objectives. The year-long study will not bind the Port to a partnership with Global Ports Holding, which initiated the proposal.

If the study determines cruise operations to be feasible, significant time may pass before implementation begins. The initiative reflects a broader effort to stimulate economic development in Bellingham. Stakeholder outreach will be an essential part of the study process.
