Residents of Glacier rally to keep USPS services running
Residents of Glacier, WA, are rallying to keep their mail services intact after the local post office halted operations following the death of the postmaster. U. S. Rep. Rick Larsen, responding to community concerns, has sent a letter to the Postmaster General seeking clarity on whether USPS plans to continue its operations at the Glacier Post Office.
The Glacier Water District, which has owned the post office building since the 1970s, has provided the space rent-free but is now facing uncertainty about its future. The closure of the post office has left residents without a means to postmark their letters, as the nearest alternative is an 8-mile trek to Maple Falls. Longtime resident Jan Eskola highlighted the post office's role beyond mail services, describing it as a vital community hub for social interaction and information exchange. Larsen's inquiry aims to address the disruption and ensure residents can maintain their connection to postal services. He has requested a response from USPS by December 5, underscoring the urgency of the situation for the community.
The outcome will significantly impact residents’ access to vital communication services in this remote area.
