Man arrested after Metrotown staff threatened with bear spray
A 44-year-old man is in custody following an incident at Burnaby's Metropolis at Metrotown where he allegedly threatened security guards with bear spray and a knife on Tuesday night. The Burnaby RCMP arrived at the mall around 10:20 p. m. and apprehended the suspect with the assistance of security personnel. Officers used a stun gun to subdue him, and he sustained minor injuries, receiving immediate medical attention.
No charges have been filed against the suspect as investigations continue, with police requesting more video evidence and witnesses. DJ Lawrence, a security expert, pointed out the increasing incidence of bear spray use in Canada, which complicates security responses due to legal restrictions on carrying defensive tools. He explained that security guards in British Columbia are unarmed and face significant challenges in protecting themselves and others during such incidents. This incident highlights broader concerns about public safety in shopping centers and the limitations of security personnel in crisis situations. The growing prevalence of bear spray misuse raises questions about public understanding of legal regulations governing its use.
