Tumwater mayor appoints new community development director
Brad Medrud will officially become the director of Tumwater's community development department on June 2, 2025, as announced by Mayor Debbie Sullivan. He succeeds Mike Matlock, who retires after an impressive 35-year tenure. Medrud has been with the city for nine years, currently serving as deputy director, and is recognized for his qualifications and positive attitude. The community development department is essential for facilitating the city’s growth by managing permitting, inspections, and long-range planning. Medrud's goals include enhancing relationships within the community and improving the efficiency of permit reviews.
He also plans to implement the 2025 comprehensive plan while addressing the pressing need for 9,000 housing units and 10,000 jobs in the coming two decades. "I will aim to bring clear and accurate information on building, development, and long-range planning," Medrud stated. His background includes work with the Washington State Department of Transportation and a strong academic foundation in urban planning.
