City of Tumwater beefs up FDCARES Program
The Tumwater City Council approved a $111,178 grant from the Association of Washington Cities to strengthen the FDCARES Program, converting a part-time specialist role into a full-time position. This program connects individuals to essential services beyond what emergency responders typically offer. Specialist Ariana Gomez has effectively processed 55 referrals this year, with an impressive 85% acceptance rate among those referred. The council's decision also involves increasing the annual fee paid to Olympia for program management, which will rise to $74,043 in 2025 and $122,500 in 2026. The interlocal agreement with Olympia has been extended through 2028 to accommodate these changes and allow for future funding applications.
Deputy Chief Shawn Crimmins emphasized the importance of the full-time role in enhancing community support services. This initiative reflects a proactive approach to public health needs and aims to reduce reliance on emergency services. Such developments highlight the city’s commitment to improving community welfare through targeted assistance programs.
