Tumwater, WALocal News

Tumwater’s FDCARES program connects 911 callers with vital support services, aiming to tackle the underlying issues behind emergency calls. Since its February launch, the program has assisted 23 individuals, with 11 currently receiving help. Staff member Ariana Gomez highlighted a success story of a caller who cut their emergency calls by 40% after engaging with the program. Council member Leatta Dahlhoff expressed interest in a resource list for the public, which staff are working to make more comprehensive. Deputy Fire Chief Shawn Crimmins mentioned that while expansion is contingent on funding, the current workload is manageable.

Additionally, the fire department is set to launch a community-based crisis response program in collaboration with Olympic Health and Recovery Services. This program will focus on behavioral health crises and aligns with House Bill 1134, establishing 988 as a crisis hotline. The Washington State Healthcare Authority will oversee the initiative, assessing its partnership with the fire department next week.
