Port awards 2.1 million contract to rehabilitate airport runway

Tumwater, WALocal News

The Port of Olympia has awarded a $2. 1 million contract to Tucci & Sons Inc. for the rehabilitation of about 700 feet of pavement on Runway 17-35 at Olympia Regional Airport. The project, which is largely funded by a Federal Aviation Administration grant, will also enhance the runway lighting systems. Construction is anticipated to begin after September 1, coinciding with the end of the breeding season for the endangered streaked horned lark.

Despite being exempt from a port policy that mandates the inclusion of apprentices in projects over $1 million, community members have emphasized the critical role of apprenticeship programs in fostering skilled labor. Local resident Debby Pattin highlighted, "Apprenticeships are vital to train new skilled workers in the trades. " In response to concerns, Commissioner Jasmine Vasavada requested more information about FAA regulations regarding apprenticeship requirements. The project received five bids, with Tucci & Sons being the lowest responsive bidder. This initiative not only aims to improve airport infrastructure but also raises discussions about workforce development in the region.
