Jay Mason named permanent police chief in Tumwater
Tumwater's Jay Mason has been appointed as the permanent police chief, effective July 1, 2025, after serving as acting chief since February. Mayor Debbie Sullivan announced the decision during a city council meeting, noting that the city decided against external recruitment to maintain the department's strong culture. Mason replaces retiring Police Chief Jon Weiks, who will leave office on June 30. He expressed his commitment to achieving full staffing levels and ensuring officers receive the necessary training and equipment to serve the community effectively. With over 30 years in law enforcement, Mason brings extensive experience, having held various roles within the Tumwater Police Department, including patrol officer, detective, and SWAT team member.
Sullivan emphasized her engagement with officers and leadership in the department before making her decision, acknowledging the challenge of pleasing everyone. Mason holds a bachelor’s degree in civic intelligence from The Evergreen State College. His mission is to provide consistent, high-level police services to the greater Tumwater community year-round.
