New risk assessment of the Davis-Meeker tree finds it poses 'moderate' risk

Tumwater, WALocal News

The latest risk assessment of the historic Davis-Meeker Garry oak tree, located near Olympia Airport, has revealed that it poses a "moderate" risk, a significant improvement from a previous assessment that classified it as "high risk. " Conducted by Todd Prager & Associates, this comprehensive evaluation utilized advanced techniques such as sonic tomography, aerial inspections, and a detailed risk assessment matrix, which considered 16 scenarios involving potential tree failures. The results indicated that the likelihood of the tree or its branches causing harm was generally low, with only a few scenarios deemed more concerning. To further mitigate risks, the report recommends strategies including reduction pruning, root management, and the installation of support systems like cables and props. These findings have prompted local officials, including Tumwater Mayor Debbie Sullivan, to reconsider previous plans to remove the tree.

The assessment not only highlights the value of the historic tree but also emphasizes the importance of safety in urban planning. As discussions continue, the community remains engaged in the fate of this significant landmark. This case exemplifies the complex interplay between environmental conservation and public safety.
