Tumwater School District cuts more than 35 school-level staff positions

Tumwater, WALocal News

The Tumwater School District (TSD) Board of Directors has approved a second resolution aimed at addressing a $7 million budget deficit, resulting in the termination of 36 school-level positions and a reduction of 91. 7 paraeducator hours for the 2025-26 school year. TSD Assistant Superintendent Ben Rarick stated that the resolution is projected to save approximately $3. 9 million, building on previous cuts that had already eliminated 27 positions from the district office. The cuts will impact various roles across grade levels, including classroom teachers and essential support staff like counselors and assistant principals.

Financial difficulties have led to a cash-negative month for the district, prompting reliance on loans to cover expenses. Community leaders and educators have expressed strong opposition to the cuts, emphasizing the importance of maintaining adequate staffing for educational quality. Tumwater Education Association President DJ Brimer highlighted the deep connection between the school district and community identity, warning that reducing staffing threatens that bond. The situation reflects broader challenges faced by public schools in securing adequate funding and resources. Ongoing discussions with labor partners indicate that the district is seeking ways to mitigate the impact of these reductions on both staff and students.
