Residents file petition to move children from Yelm to Tumwater School District

Tumwater, WALocal News

Residents of the Sunwood Lakes Community in Yelm are advocating for a shift from Yelm Community Schools (YCS) to Tumwater School District (TSD), backed by a petition signed by 54. 5% of the community. The petition highlights several concerns, including inconsistent bus transportation from YCS, which has led to delays and cancellations impacting children's timely arrival at school. Notably, the petitioners emphasize that TSD's bus routes would provide closer access to schools, enhancing convenience for families. Other factors influencing the petition include a failed YCS levy, which residents feel was inadequately communicated, and existing divisions within the neighborhood that create confusion regarding school district boundaries.

The late start on Wednesdays for YCS also poses challenges for working parents, whereas TSD's schedule offers more flexibility. The petition has been officially verified by the Thurston County Auditor and was presented to TSD's Board of Directors. The community is optimistic that this change will lead to improved educational experiences for their children and strengthen ties with the broader Tumwater area. Overall, the residents' initiative underscores their commitment to advocating for better educational resources and transportation solutions.
