3.5M contract authorized for construction of roundabout in Tumwater

Tumwater, WALocal News

The Tumwater City Council approved a $3. 5 million contract with Active Construction Inc. to construct a roundabout at the intersection of Linwood and 2nd avenues. This peanut-shaped roundabout aims to address the confusion caused by the existing stop-controlled intersection with angled, multi-lane approaches. The project will enhance pedestrian and cyclist safety along 2nd Avenue, featuring sidewalk ramps, replacements, curb extensions, and stormwater improvements.

Active Construction’s bid was the lowest among 12 received, falling below the city engineer’s estimate of $4 million. Funding will come from the Washington State Department of Transportation's Safe Routes to School Program and local impact fees. City Engineer Ryan Blaser indicated that construction could commence by the year's end, necessitating a two-month closure of the intersection. The roundabout is part of a broader effort to improve transportation infrastructure in Tumwater. These enhancements are expected to facilitate safer and more efficient traffic flow at a historically problematic intersection.
