Equity Commission established in City of Tumwater
Tumwater City Council approved a resolution on October 21 to establish an Equity Commission designed to enhance participation from underrepresented community members. The commission will consist of seven members, including one representative from the city's urban growth area, focusing on identifying barriers to inclusion and recommending improvements in local government practices. Four members will serve three-year terms, while three will start with two-year terms to maintain continuity. Assistant City Administrator Kelly Adams mentioned the intention to provide stipends for members and explore youth representation in the commission. Mayor Debbie Sullivan praised the initiative, marking it as a long-awaited addition to the city’s agenda.
The commission aims to foster a more inclusive community and improve local governance. Adams credited the involvement of Communications Manager Jason Wettstein and city staff in shaping the commission's framework. This initiative reflects Tumwater's commitment to addressing equity and inclusion in city affairs.
