Tumwater Police Department to select vendor for body cameras

Tumwater, WALocal News

The Tumwater Police Department is poised to select a vendor for its body camera program this week, having narrowed its options from six companies to two. Sergeant John Kenderesi stated that the department consulted with union members and other agencies to refine its choices. Chief Jay Mason outlined a timeline that includes final demonstrations and field testing by the end of October, with negotiations on policy set to begin in November. The department aims to finalize negotiations with the union by December, with a purchase contract expected in January. City Council member Leatta Dahlhoff expressed her dissatisfaction with the timeline, particularly the anticipated deployment after June 2026.

She questioned the decision to not utilize a state-endorsed contract that could expedite procurement, especially as neighboring jurisdictions have done so. Mason emphasized the importance of selecting the best system for the community, citing advancements in technology since the contract was bid two years ago. The department plans to engage the public through presentations and open houses to discuss the body camera initiative and gather community feedback.
