Tumwater Fire Department advises unplugging chargers as a safety precaution
Tumwater Fire Chief Brian Hurley urged residents to unplug chargers when not in use to reduce fire risks linked to lithium-ion batteries. He shared this advice during a Tumwater City Council meeting on October 7 while accepting a proclamation for Fire Prevention Week. The campaign's theme, “Charge into Fire Safety: Lithium-Ion Batteries in Your Home,” underscores the increasing number of fire incidents related to these batteries. Hurley explained that when lithium-ion batteries are damaged or improperly charged, they can overheat and pose a fire or explosion risk. He provided several safety tips, including the importance of buying UL-certified products and avoiding cheap charging cords.
Additionally, he cautioned against overcharging large electronic mobility devices. Residents can safely dispose of or recycle batteries at the Thurston County Waste and Recovery Center’s HazoHouse in Lacey. The emphasis on safety comes at a time when awareness of the dangers of lithium-ion batteries is crucial for community safety.
