City of Tumwater establishes communications department

Tumwater, WALocal News

The Tumwater City Council approved the creation of a communications department on September 2, promoting Communications Manager Jason Wettstein to communications director. City Administrator Lisa Parks highlighted the need for better communication with residents, citing a survey that revealed confusion regarding city finances. The new department will enhance public relations and clarify who represents the city in media communications. Some council members questioned the timing of the decision, particularly with a new mayor on the horizon, but the council voted unanimously in favor. Wettstein's promotion includes a salary increase of up to $50,000, which Parks confirmed is within the city’s budget.

The dedicated team will collaborate with other departments to standardize communications practices. Parks noted that the idea for the department emerged when the previous communications manager was preparing to leave, but was postponed due to budget considerations. The establishment of this department reflects a commitment to improving community engagement and transparency.
