Homes First remodels house in Tumwater
A nearly completed home in Tumwater will soon offer shelter for low-income individuals, thanks to a partnership between Homes First, the City of Tumwater, and local organizations. Previously sold to the city, the house was donated to Homes First, which specializes in rehabilitating homes for affordable rental. The project faced multiple challenges, including theft of copper and budget overruns, but local businesses like Oly Federal Savings stepped in to assist. Renovations include a new roof and solar panels, which will cut energy costs by about $3,300 per year. The home will serve as a recovery residence managed by the Oxford House organization, which has supported individuals in recovery for 50 years.
Homes First now operates 13 properties with solar systems, promoting both affordable housing and environmental sustainability. During a ribbon-cutting event, CEO Trudy Soucoup emphasized the project's community-driven nature and its positive impact on residents' lives. The home is expected to be fully ready by the end of July, accommodating six or seven tenants, as determined by Oxford House.
