Weirton distributes more of its opioid funds
Weirton Council allocated $314,926. 36 from opioid settlement funds to local initiatives, with $240,000 designated for the WVU Hancock County Extension Service. This funding will establish a prevention program assistant position, focusing on educating middle school students about the risks of substance use through the Health Rocks! Initiative. The program aims to foster resilience and wellness in the community while reducing youth substance experimentation.
The police department will receive $74,926. 36 for purchasing video surveillance equipment, sparking concerns among residents about privacy violations. Police Chief Charlie Kush reassured the public that the cameras would not be used for random surveillance but rather to assist in investigations when specific incidents arise. The city has now distributed over $1 million of its initial $1. 3 million opioid settlement funds, which are derived from lawsuits against pharmaceutical companies.
Approximately $408,000 remains, but City Attorney Vince Gurrera announced an additional $159,694. 04 will further support community initiatives. Additional funding requests are currently under review to ensure compliance with state requirements.
