Steubenville Council members discuss several levies for ballot

Toronto, OHLocal News

Steubenville City Council approved placing two municipal income tax levies on the May 5 ballot, aiming to generate over $6. 4 million annually for city needs. The 0. 7 percent levy will allocate funds for street improvements, city equipment, and recreation, while the 0. 3 percent levy primarily supports the general fund for employee wages and benefits.

Finance Director Dave Lewis reported that the levies help fund approximately 80 city employees, with two-thirds dedicated to police and fire services. City Manager Jim Mavromatis stated that Belleview Pool is unlikely to open until late in the season due to drainage issues, which need correction before the new concrete can cure. Councilman Dave Albaugh highlighted the need for maintenance of weed growth along Sunset Boulevard, which detracts from recent road resurfacing efforts. The council approved the Fiscal Year 2025-2029 consolidated plan and scheduled an economic development committee meeting. The discussion included updates on new businesses, with Chipotle expected to open soon and Starbucks already operational.

This funding strategy is critical for maintaining city services and infrastructure.
