Cigar lounge variances approved in Brooke County

Toronto, OHLocal News

The Brooke County Commission approved variances for two Weirton cigar lounges, Bistro 303 and Havanna Nights, allowing them to bypass the county's smoking ban. This decision came after the businesses' attorneys presented their investments in advanced air handler systems designed to minimize smoke exposure. Health department administrator Mike Bolen confirmed the health board's recommendation for the variances, contingent upon several conditions, including restricting entry to individuals under 21. Resident Michael Lough expressed concerns about his lack of public water service and the unsafe condition of local wells, prompting the commission to consider contacting public service districts for assistance. Diserio committed to meeting with Lough to discuss potential solutions further.

The commission also addressed community awareness regarding property complaints and announced infrastructure improvements, including paving a new parking lot. The county's smoking ban, implemented in 2014, has faced adjustments over the years, particularly for video lottery casinos. These developments reflect ongoing efforts to balance public health regulations with business interests and community needs.
