City adopts South Tacoma Neighborhood Plan
The Tacoma City Council adopted the South Tacoma Neighborhood Plan, a milestone in community-driven planning that reflects local priorities. The plan focuses on economic opportunity, transportation safety, community health, environmental sustainability, cultural identity, and affordability. Council member Joe Bushnell described it as a blueprint for South Tacoma's future, expressing gratitude for community involvement throughout the planning process. This extensive effort included over 1,300 interactions with residents, youth, and business owners, ensuring diverse voices were heard. The city allocated $50,000 in community booster funding based on input from nearly 400 local residents.
Additionally, $15,000 in contingency funds will support a tree planting initiative, enhancing the neighborhood's green spaces. Improvements to the South Tacoma Way corridor will follow, focusing on transportation safety and walkability. The plan concludes Tacoma's innovative Neighborhood Planning Program, which has guided city growth while respecting community input.
