City Council Creates New Incentives for Solid Waste Businesses to Recycle More Materials

Tacoma, WALocal News

The Tacoma City Council has unanimously approved a groundbreaking ordinance that introduces a tiered recycling tax deduction for solid waste businesses, effective January 1, 2025. This initiative is expected to significantly enhance recycling efforts by incentivizing businesses to recycle a greater volume of materials, ultimately generating an estimated $975,000 annually. Over the 2025-2026 biennium, this could contribute a total of $1. 95 million to the General Fund, which supports vital community services such as police and fire departments, street repairs, and libraries. Deputy Mayor John Hines emphasized the importance of collaborative discussions with recycling industry leaders, which shaped the policy to address their concerns effectively.

The new program aims to not only bolster recycling rates but also combat the growing issue of sham recycling haulers that exploit residents. Hines expressed pride in the collaborative process, stating it serves as a model for other cities in Washington state. This ordinance aligns with Tacoma's commitment to environmental protection and the goals outlined in its Climate Action Plan. By fostering a supportive environment for recycling businesses, Tacoma demonstrates a proactive approach to sustainability and community engagement.
