Humane Society takes in more than 30 small dogs

The Humane Society for Tacoma & Pierce County took in 32 small dogs on June 25, compounding existing challenges as they brace for the Fourth of July holiday, a peak time for lost pets. The organization, currently caring for 151 dogs, 468 cats, and 30 rabbits, seeks community assistance through adoptions, fostering, or donations. According to Lauren Green, the director of marketing and communications, large intakes severely strain their resources, especially during this busy season. Last year, the shelter saw a 14% increase in animal intake around the holiday, a trend expected to continue. Fireworks often frighten pets, leading to more animals escaping their homes.

The shelter offers a foster-to-adopt option for pets awaiting spay or neuter surgery and encourages financial contributions to support medical care. New monthly donors can help secure a $10,000 matching gift from VCA Animal Hospitals until July 31. Community involvement is crucial to ensure the shelter can continue providing care for these animals.
