Hearing Examiner Approves Lakewood Towne Center Apartments with Conditions

Tacoma, WALocal News

The proposed Lakewood Towne Center Apartments has garnered conditional approval to proceed through the permitting process, aiming to establish 309 residential units and 473 parking spaces on a currently vacant lot. This development will require the relocation of the Barnes & Noble bookstore and includes a mix of building heights, featuring one five-story and seven three-story structures, alongside amenities such as a pool, playground, and EV charging stations. Despite the proposal's potential benefits, public opposition has been significant, with concerns raised about traffic congestion, environmental degradation, and the impact on local character, evidenced by over 155 written comments submitted. In response, hearing examiner Stephanie Marshall has approved the project with conditions, including traffic-impact fees, advanced stormwater management practices, and the preservation of existing trees. The approval also allows for one building to exceed the maximum length by 10% to better integrate the project with surrounding residential areas.

The developer, Alliance Residential, has not disclosed construction cost estimates or timelines, keeping some details unclear. The project reflects an ongoing dialogue between urban development and community preservation efforts. The city's commitment to environmental stewardship and community engagement remains central to the approval process.
