New football coaches introduced at Gig Harbor, Peninsula high schools
Gig Harbor and Peninsula high schools are poised for transformative changes in their football programs with the introduction of new head coaches for the fall season. Jeff Scoma, who previously made a mark at Stanwood High School by leading the Spartans to back-to-back state tournament berths, will take over the Gig Harbor Tides' coaching duties. His tenure at Stanwood was highlighted by a remarkable 83% increase in student participation and a Class 3A state quarterfinal appearance in 2022. On the other side of town, Peninsula has promoted Clay Mauro from assistant coach to head coach, filling the shoes of the esteemed Ross Filkins, who stepped down after three decades at the helm. Mauro brings experience from the competitive 5A leagues in Nevada and is expected to inject youthful energy into the Seahawks program.
Both coaches are anticipated to implement their unique strategies, with Scoma favoring a run-first approach that previously led to impressive player performances. The hiring of these coaches signals a new era for both high schools as they strive to enhance their football programs and compete at higher levels. The local community is eager to see how these changes will impact the teams in the upcoming season.
