Tacoma grocerys workers prepare for union vote after changes implemented by new owner

Tacoma, WALocal News

Workers at Marlene’s Market & Deli in Tacoma are preparing to vote on union representation after significant changes were introduced by new owner Lassens Natural Foods & Vitamins. The United Food and Commercial Workers Local 367 is supporting the employees in their efforts to organize, citing reduced store hours, especially Sunday closures, and alterations to healthcare benefits as primary motivators for the move. With over 50 employees at the Tacoma location, the union aims to address pressing concerns about pay and working conditions. Joe Kennedy, a deli worker, articulated the need for better training and communication from management, emphasizing the stress caused by the abrupt changes. Union representatives have noted that these organizing efforts reflect a broader trend in the grocery industry, where employees are increasingly seeking a collective bargaining voice.

The situation illustrates the significant impact of corporate acquisitions on local labor dynamics and the rights of workers. As the unionization process unfolds, workers are hopeful for a positive response from management regarding their demands. This organizing drive highlights the ongoing challenges faced by employees in the retail sector, particularly in the context of evolving corporate strategies.
