Monroe court program works to rewire Domestic Violence offenders to reduce, cease repeat incidents

Snohomish, WALocal News

Monroe Municipal Court has implemented a Domestic Violence Moral Reconation Therapy (DV-MRT) program aimed at helping convicted offenders change their behavior and reduce recidivism. In 2024, seven individuals graduated from this cognitive-behavioral therapy initiative, which Judge Jessica Ness noted addresses the high incidence of intimate partner violence in the court. The program consists of workbook modules and weekly group therapy sessions, where participants learn to identify and manage triggers for violent behavior. Each participant pays a fee of $125, though judges can waive this for low-income individuals. Currently, the program serves male offenders, while female offenders are referred to other existing programs.

The Washington state agencies, including the Department of Corrections, may also refer individuals to DV-MRT. Research indicates that successful completion of this program significantly lowers reconviction rates. Overall, DV-MRT represents a proactive approach to tackling domestic violence within the community.
