LFP puts affordable housing in the parking lot for later

Shoreline, WALocal News

Lake Forest Park plans to defer affordable housing initiatives while adhering to minimum state mandates regarding housing types. The state requires the city to revise its zoning rules to allow for middle housing and at least two accessory dwelling units (ADUs). The city council reviewed these recommendations, with the Planning Commission supporting a minimalistic approach. Councilmember Jon Lebo stated that this approach aligns with current needs. Meanwhile, Councilmember Semra Riddle urged for a tracking system for deferred affordable housing incentives to ensure they are not overlooked.

Currently, LFP prohibits middle housing types and limits ADUs to one per lot. The proposed changes will rename single-family zones to low-density residential, allowing duplexes and two ADUs per lot. A public hearing is set for June 12, and the city must finalize new regulations by June 30, 2025, or face state intervention.
