Girmay Zahilay sworn into office as the seventh elected King County Executive

Girmay H. Zahilay was sworn in as King County Executive on November 25, 2025, becoming the youngest and first immigrant to hold this significant role. The swearing-in ceremony took place in Seattle, officiated by U. S. District Court Judge Richard A.

Jones. Zahilay leads over 18,000 employees and serves a population of more than 2. 3 million in the 12th largest county in the U. S. His administration will focus on four key areas: combating homelessness and crime, building affordable infrastructure, increasing community engagement, and improving government accountability.

Celebrated by over 200 community members and local leaders at his inauguration, Zahilay emphasized the importance of connecting with constituents. His election victory by nearly 10 points reflects a shift in leadership, as he succeeds Dow Constantine after 16 years. Zahilay's background as a former resident of affordable housing adds a personal dimension to his policy priorities. His transition process will extend into early 2026, indicating a thoughtful approach to governance.
