Harborview Medical Center reports a surge of accidents involving two-wheel vehicles

Shoreline, WALocal News

Harborview Medical Center has reported a startling 36% increase in accidents involving e-bikes and e-scooters compared to last year, particularly affecting children. Thirteen-year-old Yann Gorbatov suffered significant injuries while trying to ride down a neighborhood stairway, including broken bones and internal damage. Dr. Beth Ebel, a pediatrician at Harborview, expresses concern about the rising number of injuries linked to electric bicycles. Yann's case illustrates the critical role of helmets in preventing serious harm; he would have faced greater injuries had he not been wearing one.

The trend suggests that more children are using these vehicles without adequate safety precautions. Medical professionals are urging local authorities to consider implementing safety measures and educational programs to combat this issue. As more kids embrace e-bikes and e-scooters, the need for increased awareness and safety practices becomes urgent. Communities must prioritize safety to protect young riders and address this growing concern.
