New Law BEAM Act

Shoreline, WALocal News

The BEAM Act, recently signed into law in Washington State, allows speed-limiting devices to be installed in vehicles of individuals convicted of reckless driving or accumulating three or more moving violations. This initiative responds to the tragic deaths of Buster, Eloise, Andrea, and Matilda in a March 2024 crash near Renton, where the defendant has since pled guilty to all felony counts. By enacting this legislation, Washington positions itself among the first states to adopt such life-saving measures. The law aims to deter chronic speeders and enhance public safety. Representative Mari Leavitt, the bill's prime sponsor, emphasized its importance in protecting families.

The legislation reflects a growing acknowledgment of the dangers posed by reckless driving. Community advocates celebrated the signing, viewing it as a critical step towards safer roads. The BEAM Act demonstrates a commitment to preventing future tragedies through legislative action.
