The Wisdom of Crowds How collaboration shaped the Ching Garden design

Shoreline, WALocal News

The Ching Garden design process brought together community members and experts to create a garden honoring Asian American cultural heritage in Shoreline. Landscape architects from Jones and Jones facilitated the collaboration, ensuring that diverse opinions shaped the final design. Two community meetings allowed participants to discuss design elements, resulting in a plan that features educational spaces, traditional Asian structures, and gathering areas for various group sizes. The design includes paths reflecting the spirit of Asian gardens, along with symbolic elements such as the infinity loop. The project successfully captured the community's desires, blending ideas into a cohesive vision.

Organizers expressed amazement at the near-universal approval of the design, which balances gardening activities with neighborhood needs. The Ching Garden aims to celebrate the legacy of Joe and Jennie Ching while promoting community engagement. To support the project, financial contributions are welcomed, and volunteers can participate in upcoming work parties.
