For the Birds Baby Bird Season

Shoreline, WALocal News

Baby bird season has arrived, prompting residents to be cautious during yard cleanup to protect nesting birds. Many local species, such as Dark-eyed Juncos and Song Sparrows, nest on the ground, hidden among plants and debris. Juncos require about 12-13 days for incubation, with fledglings leaving the nest shortly thereafter. Most people only need to wait around two weeks before nests are empty, often unaware of their presence until they see adult birds feeding young. Ground nests are particularly susceptible to predation and disturbance, making awareness essential.

Leaving certain areas of the yard untouched can significantly aid in the survival of these birds. Additionally, cavity-nesting species like Chickadees may also use artificial nesting boxes. Recognizing the importance of preserving bird habitats can contribute to local biodiversity amidst shrinking environments.
