North King County has the worst homeless shelter shortage in the county

Shoreline, WALocal News

North King County is grappling with the worst homeless shelter shortage in King County, as revealed by recent data from the King County Regional Homeless Authority (KCRHA). The number of unsheltered individuals has skyrocketed from 260 in 2020 to 1,900 in 2024, while the available temporary shelter beds have only marginally increased from 85 to 198. This results in a staggering ratio of 9. 6 homeless individuals per available bed, compared to the county average of 2. 1 to 1.

KCRHA's 2024 Point-in-Time estimate, conducted every two years, shows a 26% overall increase in homelessness since 2022. The five cities in North King County—Shoreline, Lake Forest Park, Kenmore, Bothell, and Woodinville—are each contributing to KCRHA for coordinated services aimed at addressing this crisis. Last year, KCRHA noted the urgent need for more shelter beds in the area. The data underscores a significant challenge for local officials as they work to provide adequate housing solutions. Addressing this shortage is critical for the well-being of the homeless population in North King County.
