Volunteer work party at Midvale Gardens May 3, 2025

A volunteer work party at Midvale Gardens is set for May 3, 2025, from 11 a. m. to 2 p. m. Volunteers will lay cardboard and distribute wood chips to revitalize the neglected Seattle City Light property located at N 192nd St and the Interurban Trail.

Five years ago, this site was overrun with blackberry vines and holly bushes, but efforts to maintain it were halted due to COVID-19. The community has since employed goats, financed by a City of Shoreline grant, to help manage the overgrowth. Participants should wear boots and gloves, and bring clippers if available, to assist in the cleanup. This initiative aims to safely cover decades' worth of hypodermic needles found in the soil, a remnant of the site's past use by homeless drug addicts. Proper disposal of obvious needles has already taken place, but ongoing maintenance is crucial for the community's safety.

Ultimately, this volunteer effort reflects a strong commitment to restoring the area and fostering community engagement.
