Stanford bill expanding job opportunities for people with disabilities signed into law

Shoreline, WALocal News

Washington Governor signed Senate Bill 5501 into law, enhancing job opportunities for people with disabilities. The bipartisan legislation, sponsored by Sen. Derek Stanford, prohibits employers from requiring a driver's license unless driving is essential to the job. Stanford stated that such requirements unfairly exclude qualified candidates. Approximately 12% of Washingtonians live with a disability, facing significant barriers to employment.

Anna Zivarts, director of the Disability Mobility Initiative at Disability Rights Washington, noted that many employers still list a driver's license as a requirement for jobs unrelated to driving. This legislation aims to reduce employment disparities, as people with disabilities are a third less likely to be employed. Furthermore, about 12% of driving-age adults do not possess a driver's license, disproportionately affecting people of color and young individuals. SB 5501 will take effect on July 27, 2025, joining similar measures in Oregon and California.
