Rockslide on Chuckanut Drive

Shoreline, WALocal News

A significant rockslide impacted Chuckanut Drive (SR 11) near Bellingham, resulting in the closure of the scenic roadway. The slide, approximately 150 feet long and 30 feet deep, occurred without causing any injuries, as no travelers were present at that moment. Photos from the Washington State Patrol depict Trooper Turley, who stands at 6'5", offering a stark reference for the size of the slide. The closure affects all types of travelers, including bikers and walkers, between the Oyster Dome trailhead and Chuckanut Manor. Officials anticipate the closure will last several days, with the potential for an extended timeframe.

Rockslides are common in the Puget Sound region, but the scale of this incident raises awareness about safety on natural roads. The Washington State Department of Transportation has not yet announced a specific timeline for reopening the road. Residents and visitors are advised to seek alternative routes while the area remains closed.
