Potential sales tax measure would prevent devastating cuts to public safety --Zahilay, Dembowski urge swift action

Shoreline, WALocal News

King County Council Chair Girmay Zahilay and Budget Chair Rod Dembowski urged Executive Shannon Braddock to quickly enact a 0. 1% sales tax to prevent $160 million in cuts to public safety services. This tax option, authorized by House Bill 2015, seeks to address significant fiscal shortfalls affecting law enforcement, public defense, and public health. Zahilay emphasized the dire consequences of inaction, highlighting that community safety would be jeopardized. Dembowski pointed out that property tax revenue has been constrained for over two decades, necessitating this new funding mechanism.

The proposed sales tax would direct funds exclusively to King County, covering essential services like staffing for prosecutors and supporting behavioral health programs. The councilmembers thanked state representatives for their support in enabling this tax measure. They expressed optimism that the ordinance would receive backing in the Council if presented by the Executive. Implementing this tax could be a reasonable investment to preserve vital public safety services.
