The Friends of the Richmond Beach Library, an organization with a legacy stretching back to 1899, has been honored with the Marge Unruh Community Service Award at the Richmond Beach Community Association meeting in April 2025. Initially formed as a lending library utilizing discarded books from the Seattle Public Library, the Friends have played a pivotal role in the community's literary and educational development. Their efforts led to the establishment of a public library in 1912, and by 1944, they had joined the King County Rural Library System, enhancing their outreach. The library now operates from a modern building that opened in 2001, located on the former Richmond Beach School site, showcasing their commitment to evolving with community needs. Looking forward, the Friends will actively participate in the Strawberry Festival on June 7, 2025, where they will host a donated art and used book sale, further promoting literacy and community spirit.

This event highlights their dedication to not only preserving but enhancing the cultural fabric of Richmond Beach. The award and upcoming festival participation reflect the organization's significant impact on local community engagement and service. Their long-standing history is a testament to the vital role libraries play in fostering community connections and supporting education.
